Why I Stopped Watching NBC’s Smash

When Smash premiered back on February 6th it was an exciting new show that I was really excited about. Although it had its similarities to Glee – there was singing and dancing – it had the promise to be original and different. So I started watching (and reviewing) and I really liked it. I watched five episodes straight and I had only disliked one episode. Other shows started to out prioritize the watching of Smash so they started filling up my DVR. I had full intention of watching them and reviewing each episode when I had time.

Then just last week I was coerced into watching what was then the latest episode (#12). My girlfriend really wanted to watch in the background while we were doing something else. So I capitulated and thought that I wouldn’t watch that close and I’d watch later. Turned out I paid more attention than I had originally planned. Unfortunately for the show and it’s ratings episode twelve turned me off and it had lost me as a viewer. I couldn’t believe what I had been watching. I had seen a few TV critic reviews of episodes 6 – 11 and I saw a couple headlines that said something like Smash – # of eyerolls this episode (I call them “ugh” moments). I disregarded them a little bit considering I don’t share every opinion with other critics.

I was wrong to disregard them. The episode was garbage. Eye rolls galore or in my cases ugh moments and a number of out loud “wtf am I watching” moments. Why was there Indian dancing? It seemed so uncalled for and it wasn’t even good. (Please note that I do actually like watching those kind of performances.) It took my girlfriend mere minutes to catch me up on the six episodes I missed. Six episodes!! That says something in and of itself. I should have known better to stop watching earlier when Michael sang his feelings for Julia, kissed her and Leo saw it. Ugh!

So I’m now just another disenfranchised viewer. Well, actually not since I’ll no longer be watching Smash. All the episodes have been deleted from my DVR. Thankfully there is much better entertainment to watch out there on TV.
