I just wasn’t motivated to write this review but I knew I had to get it done before this week’s Christmas themed episode airs tomorrow night. ”Up All Night,” Whitney’s ninth installment was the first episode that I just truly didn’t like. It was not funny (at all) and the story was bleh. I even rewatched it just to make sure I didn’t miss anything or was being too harsh. Thankfully the episode is only about 22 minutes without commercials. So this will be a pretty short review and I’m going to mostly highlight things I didn’t like. Rest of the after the break as there are spoilers.
Story: Lily asks Whitney to be her maid of honor. Whitney accepts and has to plan an engagement party for Neal and Lily. This drives her nuts and causes her to have insomnia. She goes to her old psychiatrist (yes, of course she has one) to get sleeping pills. They make her sleep walk – she is still a train wreck. Party goes off without a hitch but doesn’t solve her insomnia. Back at the psychiatrist we find out she has baby angst. There’s conflict between Whitney and Alex over having kids and marriage. They make up as Whitney admits she could imagine a life only with Alex. The side story was about Roxanne freezing her eggs and having to get shots. They just turned that into situational humor. I just didn’t like any of it.
Cast: Chelsea Handler guest starred as the psychiatrist. Usually I think she’s great but this character was written poorly and Chelsea’s hard rendition just really didn’t help. In this episode I hated her. All she had were poorly written, poorly executed, unfunny one liners. Bleh! The good thing (which did not make up for anything) is that Alex (Chris D’elia) was somewhat funny by himself. Everyone else was just kind of sub-par.
The laugh track really got to me this week. I really had no laughing or even chuckling moments. Hearing that in the background just made me want to stop watching.
I was really disappointed in the episode. Hopefully they make up for it with the Christmas themed epside. What did you think?
