Do You Know When Smash Premieres? – VIDEO

If you are like the vast majority of America you probably already do because you probably watched the Superbowl last night on NBC and they certainly wanted you to know when Smash premieres.  For those of you that don’t it premieres tonight, February 6th at 10:00PM on NBC.  I will note that it wasn’t actually overkill at the Superbowl with the promotions.  I counted only 4 promos though I may have missed one or two.  They did have a number of banner ads for the new show up during their online feed though.  I want to pause and give NBC a shout out for its great TV and online coverage of the game and I think they produced a pretty good half time show.

I’m excited but I’m starting to get a little skeptical of the show.  When I first started seeing teaser ads for it I was very intrigued by the concept, excited by the cast and more than a bit excited that Steven Spielberg is executive producing.  Now I’ve started to see one too many ads for it that I can only feel there is something wrong.  There’s building up the buzz, then there’s building up the buzz … you know.  I hope it’s more the former than the latter because I think it could be a great show.

The premise is interesting.  It’ll be about the drama behind the scenes, as the team prepares an ambitious Broadway musical on the life of Marilyn Monroe.  There also looks to be some big budget potential on the stage scenes as well.  The cast seems good with some big names in it.  It stars Debra Messing, Angelica Houston, Megan Hilty and Katharine McPhee amongst others.  The previews keep saying “introducing Katharine McPhee” but I’m pretty sure we knew her already.  She was runner up on American Idol Season 5 and also had a few acting credits under her belt already such as “The House Bunny” and “Shark Night 3D.”  I guess NBC hopes we all have short memories.

I’m certainly not too skeptical to watch.  I’m hoping for a hit show because quite frankly I just like good entertainment.  I can’t think of a show that was set on the backdrop of broadway (maybe it’s just me) and I think it’ll be exciting.  I’ll probably muse about it in a week or so.  Catch it tonight at 10:00PM. In the mean time watch the trailer below.
